Firewall Module

Tonight I spent several hours evaluating the 36-module Firewall power distributor that LessLoss recently custom built for me. These are my first impressions, recognizing that the distributor is not fully broken in:

With the distributor in my system the sound is more balanced and refined from top to bottom with much less sibilance at the top end. I heard this improvement most with soprano and tenor voices, piano strings, cymbals and brass instruments.

The midrange sounds more full bodied. When I temporarily removed the distributor, instruments and voices sounded thinner with noticeably less "meat on the bones."

The acoustic ambience is more believable. Instruments and voices sound like they are in a real concert hall rather than an artificial sounding, overly-reverberate field. Instruments and voices sound more present and involving.

Instruments and voices do not seem as razor-sharp focused, but their positions and bounds are well-defined and more natural, as in a real live environment.

In my system the sound stage is large with excellent separation between instruments -- about the same with or without the distributor.

With the distributor, on some very familiar CD tracks for the first time I noticed the subtle sound of rustling sheet music while the choir was singing; the deep, throaty cough of a man in the audience; a squeaky hinge on a distant door in the ambient background; and the fluttering rumble of an organ pedal bass note that I for a moment mistook as a helicopter hovering over my house -- not that these could not have been heard before, but the enhanced detail brought them to my attention.

The distributor enables my system to better resolve complex orchestral passages and deliver them clearly and coherently in music that without the distributor sounds congested and distorted. It is uncanny how this distributor can make such a difference.

Going back and forth between the Firewall distributor and no Firewall distributor in my system, I can honestly enjoy the sound either way, but I decidedly prefer the sound with the distributor. The sound is not quite as airy, edgy, big and expansive, but to my ears it is more natural, refined, engaging and non-fatiguing. With break in of the distributor the sound will likely improve even more than I heard tonight, but regardless, what I heard tonight is the best sound I've heard from my system to date and it makes me a happy camper.

DFPC Series [Signature]

I'm extremely happy with the DFPC Signature cable. I installed DFPC on my preamp/DAC and amp. The cable transformed my system. It made the sound seamless and clear. I have good components for my system but I wasn't very happy with the performance until I got this DFPC. I didn't play many music I own because it just didn't sound good to me and I thought it was source/recording issue. I was wrong there...with DFPC, it sounds amazing no matter what format I'm playing, 192K flac, CD, MP3, Youtube and whatever! Symphony sounds amazing and clarity really contributes to separate the different instruments and in choir section you can really feel each individual's voice singing to create the experience. Also, after installing DFPC, I am playing many of the music I own about half the volume as it's super clear and I can hear really good now so no need to play loud any more. Now I realized that it's almost pointless to have high end system without power cable like this as it just doesn't provide the experience you would expect from it. I am extremely happy with my system now and I really feel the system is complete and I don't need to upgrade anything to improve the sound, maybe for the esthetic reason only ^ ^ Oh, DFPC cable is also amazing looking too!! And the last thing, I recommend adding DFPC to your preamp/DAC first, it made the bigger difference. I thought it will make more of a difference on the amp but preamp/DAC performance improved more significantly. You really need DFPC for both preamp/DAC and amp, I just thought I just need for the amp but actually preamp/DAC is more important.

Echo's End

When that “Little Wooden Jewel” arrived it immediately went into burn-in, 24/7.  Finally, after some 3 weeks my good friend, also a hi fi connoisseur with a self-taught electronics background, came over for the unveiling.  The amp was already powered-up, a piece of jazz was selected, I pressed the start button, and there flowed forth an absolutely breathtaking 10 seconds of heaven!  We both inhaled deeply at the same instant as if startled.

Let me see if I can communicate this better. Let’s say that you are attending a full orchestral concert.  You have ideal seating.  Before the concert begins, you get up to answer nature’s call. Upon returning, the concert has begun. As you enter the auditorium you are immediately enveloped in the full alive acoustical environment. This instant immersion is not something one generally experiences with an audio system. That is the precise experience my friend and I experienced.  We experienced absolutely no impediment or restriction to the flow of the music.  In my imagination I visualized the flow of music coming down the wires totally free of any impediment. There was a sense of openness, clarity, cohesiveness of the entire assembladge of the musicians. The dynamics seemed unlimited.

As we continued our initial listening session with different kinds of music we were continually impressed with the naturalness of the sound with no limitation on our sense of space or volume. I feel that the speed of reproduction of musical attacks where speed is a component of the realness of the live presentation, our intuition accepts this as live. Add to that the absolute “blackness” of the surrounding space, the performance is almost three dimensional. It is amazing how the naturalness of the presentation engenders a relaxed state of mind in the listener.

The balance of the musical spectrum presented is remarkably natural. Nothing beyond the music commands your attention. Focusing on the music as a means of communication, the ease and naturalness of the performance can move you in ways you may not have experienced before.

Listening to voice is an interesting experience. We all have experienced sibilants which we automatically find annoying. However, with the Echo’s End, sibilants that were in the recording came through so naturally that it rarely distracted the listener. This is not to say that the Echo’s End presents the playback as soft or sweet or unbalanced. On the contrary, its presentation is as fast and accurate, and dynamic as “live.” The presentation of the voice clearly involves all parts of the singer’s anatomy that is involved in creating the sound. So convincing is it that frequently listeners sense the performer may be looking their way and immediately shy smiles breakout across their face.

I guess I have to mention the extended range of the musical spectrum. Deep and driving bass was crisp, sharp, and dynamic and clearly presented without any sense of “mushiness.” If the music, and conductor calls for it, it can blow you out of your chair. The extended upper register comes across as smooth and liquid as one could want. What is so wonderful about the range of Echo’s End’s presentation is how balanced it is as the music flows across it’s entire spectrum. There will be no “screwing-up the face” in anticipation of unpleasant hard high register attacks.

The piano notes struck appeared with an amazing speed and power.  One could not ignore the obvious speed and expanded dynamics of each chorus of instruments and each note or string of notes struck on the piano. The subtlety of the percussion from the rear of the stage though playing at the same time as the other instruments had no difficulty making itself heard in surprising detail.  Here is an interesting observation: sibilants from male or female voices on all prior DACs formerly in my system could be annoying.

But with the ECHO’S END in place, the sibilants were there, but natural, open and unfocused, and no longer annoying.  Deep bass was crisp and driving without a trace of looseness or excessive rumble.  Also, there was an amazing balance between the full upper audio range with the full lower range. No preference was evident in the middle range.  Another accurate description of the sound is relaxing and so natural and non-tiring.

I believe you may want to know the kind of DAC this “Little Wooden Jewel” replaced. It was a Swiss made $24,000 truly wonderful DAC that did not have the overall “magic” of the Echo’s End. I have enjoyed it for the past 7 months. It will shortly be offered for sale.

I’m sorry this has taken too long to compose and likely too long to read. But my Echo’s End awaits and I must return.

Echo's End

Echo's End. It started when I was in need for a Dac to be used for our audio show here in p.i as most my Dacs are custom made. But I have others like Audio Note Dac and a highly modified Thor Dac. These Dacs are better when A/B with current Accuphase Dac. I stumbled upon LessLoss and upon talking to Louis this Dac seemed to make sense. So I closed my eyes and took the leap. Arrived perfectly packed and with a bulletproof case. I was worried that I'd be dissapointed as with most Dacs I've tried. Especially a non tube Dac. Well, when I switched to the Echo's End fresh (no burn-in at all), I knew this was special. Just had a naturalness and right tone that most I've heard couldn't get right. I'm not good with words but all I can say is that it sounds real, organic and relaxed. I have the Ale compression drivers on lecleach horns which are 110dB and these horns are very unforgiving with mechanical sounding Dacs. You must have top of the line front end. The Echo's just threw music after music with believability I haven't heard from most Dacs on the market.
Till now I haven't had the itch to take it out of my system.

Firewall Module

Last winter Louis built me a distributor with 8 Firewall Modules, 4 wired in parallel to one outlet used for another distributor and 4 wired in series to the other 7 outlets. It is the black one pictured in his blog.

After the usual tedious 250 hours of burn-in my system started to shine like never before. Everything became clearer and smoother. Dynamics increased and the soundstage widened and got deeper. Even my power hungry Pioneer Kuro plasma TV became more luminous and colorful. Lovely to watch.

So, when Louis launched the single modules in the wooden box, I ordered another 8 and inserted them before my most important components - DAC, preamp and monoamps, two on each. This time the improvement was threefold and I felt I was in audio heaven - until he launched the 5xFW Modules. Now I new even heaven could be bettered after my experience with the single units, and bought 4 of them to get a system containing 36 single Firewall Modules.

Today I removed them from their burn-in position before the 8xFW distributor and inserted them into the crucial components. WOW! What a Giant Leap kind of improvement. Bigger, larger better. Incredible soundstage with precisely pinpointed instruments. Vivid but smooth highs, clear and transparent midrange and a deep, powerfull bass. Absolutely wonderful and the best sound I have ever heard, not only in my own system, but anywhere including shows, demos and in the systems of my audiophile friends. What can I say except agree to the concept of "A truely triumph". I´m as close you could come to being awestruck by these Firewall modules.

Thanks Louis, all your promises came true!

Firewall Module

Echo's End DAC Update & 5X Firewall Module.

The DAC is truly burned-in and has since been further enhanced with the addition of the 5X Firewall module to the integrated amp and a standard Firewall Module to the CD player used as a transport. All components are powered by LessLoss Signature power cables and the IC used is the Homage to Time. Since my last review, the sound volume output appears to have returned to original levels.

The addition of the 5X Firewall module has brought about an unexpectedly large boost in performance - much greater than using just the standard module - separation of instruments and voices is not only startling but the background is really dark. Music sounds fluid and natural while voices have slightly more clarity. Bass is more 'musical' and the high frequencies are relaxed and well-defined. The high registers of the piano sound like crystal - a great example is Liszt's "La Campanella" (Yundi Li _ A portrait). The virtual absence of listening fatigue is greatly appreciated. Some audiophile friends have been similarly impressed when these components were tested on one of their systems.

I have also had the experience of using the LessLoss USB firewall module which has lifted sound from USB sources to a new level.

I have found that upgrading a decent system with super components from LessLoss like power and IC cables, the DAC and firewall modules have brought about greater sonic improvement than rushing out to buy the latest models of system equipment every year or so.

Thank you Louis for producing products that live up to their claims of excellence. As they say, the proof is in the pudding.

Bindbreaker Vibration Control Equipment Foot

Just got my Bindbreakers yesterday. Once again LessLoss has done it! I have a very thick maple board and points from Mapleshade under my Meridian C-D player. Very fine improvement with these several years ago. But taking out the points and replacing them with Bindbreakers over the maple board showed a small but absolutely clear improvement in clarity and presence in my C-Ds. I've been listening these past two days to several C-Ds thatI I know well. It is a joy to hear them again! That much more real, clean and present. I've never been disappointed with a LessLoss product. Still true!

Firewall Module

The LESSLOSS USB Firewall Key is an excellent tweak for your digital system.

I ripped several CDs onto a top class USB key, with and without it, then listened to the files, rather than listening to the CD with or without it.

Fact is the sound gets way better with it, and the ripped files can prove to anyone not owning an USB Firewall Key that it works, and how well!

I'm not into poetic like or long reviews, but I noticed that a haze is gone, and more air is noticed to let music flow. Things get more natural, easy to enjoy.

Would rate it as a pro quality tool that can change your system like you had a new, better digital files reader/streamer, and it will improve even the best one you could find!

I have not tried the Audioquest or iFi USB noise filters, so if anyone has compared them to the LESSLOSS unit, I would be happy to read more.

No fears, I am sure the latter is the leader, results wise.... :)

Bindbreaker Vibration Control Equipment Foot

The Bindbreakers arrived and since Friday I compared them to the footers that ​I have used before. These are the Symposium Rollerblock Jr. and the Synergistic Research MIG 2. Both are reasonably priced and make a nice improvement to the sound reception.

But they are not on par with the Bindbreakers. Placed under the turntable I didn’t expect to much, as the turntable rests also on a thick Symposium shelf. Wow, how could I be so mistaken? The improvement was not subtle, but, well… that could be settled somewhere between big and huge.

It seemed as if the Bindbreakers ​do such a good job, that it feels as if all the information from the vinyl is sucked out and transported to your ears. And again it is not the often heard technical improvements that come with gear or tweaks of other competitors, but the same as is the case with the DFPC power cords, the Bindbeakers come with pure musicality and naturalness of tone. You can sit back relaxed and listen in awe of what you’ve missed before. It would be interesting if there is a customer who can compare the Bindbreakers with footers like Stillpoints or Finite Elemente that come with sometimes insane prices.

Two days before receiving the Bindbreakers my CD drive gave up the ghost and has to be repaired. So I had to install my old Ariston CD player as a drive and connect it with the Echo's End. This showed the superiority of the Bindbreakers that took their place below the Echo's End. The combination of my old player with the Echo's End and connected with an old RCA digital cable from Zu outperformed the much better CD drive that was connected with a shorter, more classy AES/EBU cable to the Echo's End. The CD drive was placed on a Sicomin base, the Ariston player sits on a cheap, sort of Sorbothane foot. How much better will this get when my CD drive is back from repair?

Also the Bindbreaker looks much different than similar tweaks of other manufacturers, I really like the design, and form follows function here, and not vice versa as is the case with some sofas that look nice, cost a fortune but gets your back in pain after resting half an hour.

I'm very very pleased with the performance of the Bindbreakers and they will definitely stay here. LessLoss came up with another reasonably priced item that gets the highest scoring. Thank you.
